For
many years the activities of the Rushen Amateur Dramatic Society
included membership of the Manx Amateur Drama Federation (MADF) and the
Society played a full part within the Federation, sending delegates to
Federation meetings and reporting back to members of the Society,
acting as host to visiting drama groups participating in the Easter
Festival of Plays and cooperating in the work of the Federation in
every possible way. Elsewhere in this account reference is made to
occasions when the Society entered this Easter Festival with 'Ladies In Retirement' in 1962, 'The Enquiry' in 1973 and 'Private Lives'
in 1974. In 1982 the Society's delegate reported that the Federation had decided to hold meetings in Douglas, the north of the Island and in the south, in rotation, in an attempt to stimulate more interest, which at that time seemed to be waning. Groups outside Douglas welcomed this idea but the proposal was never put into practice. Gradually members from the Society began to feel that the Federation was showing little interest or support for anything outside the Island's capital. In August 1990 a letter was addressed to the Federation to enquire why the Rushen Society had received no notification of the dates and venues of meetings over the previous twelve months. Arbory Players had already dropped out of the Federation when the Rushen group came to the conclusion that nothing was to be gained by continued membership. In October 1992 the committee agreed that the Society should withdraw its membership of the Manx Amateur Drama Federation forthwith. Formal resignation followed. As far as is known this decision was accepted by the Federation without comment and no attempt has been made to encourage the Rushen Players to rejoin. Today Rushen Players is an active memer of MADF and representatives of the Committee regularly attend MADF meetings. Rushen Players is pleased to play host the the increasingly successful MADF One Act Play Festival each February, hels at the Erin Arts Centre and assists with the organisation of the Easter Festival of Plays at the Gaiety Theatre in Douglas. |
