Shelagh Stephenson's play centres around three
sisters who come together, as adults before their mothers and with seemingly
nothing in common bar their genetic bonds and memories. The play focuses on how
each deals with this stressful situation. The sisters’ memories show that despite them all being
there at the time of their childhood they cannot agree on the facts of an
experience which unified them.We glimpse the loss of identity and memory associated
with Alzheimer’s as seen through Vi’s fractured thoughts and memories. The death of their mother provides the occasion for a
get-together but what starts out as a time for fond recollection turns into the
chance to visit bitter resentments. There is always an inappropriate time to
argue and to lay animosities and resentments to rest along with their mother
Violet. Of course, love, and understanding are always present, “forgiveness is just a decision – and then you’re free”.
