In December 1940 America, a cross-country train carries, in its luggage compartment, the bodies of two great American writers - Nathaniel West and F Scott Fitzgerald.

Also aboard is young May who harbours hopes of becoming a missionary. She shares her seat with a charming young flier, Raleigh, heading to New York to become a writer having recently been discharged from the Military. We follow the highs and lows of their three year journey.
